An unusual strain of Salmonella Enteritidis, phage type 14b NxCpl, led to at least nine outbreaks across England and Wales. The strain had been linked previously with poultry and egg consumption. Five of the outbreaks were associated with Asian restaurants, three to other types of restaurants, and one to a care home. Two people in the care home died due to this outbreak.
