2012 Outbreak of Salmonella Birkenhead Linked to Raw Venison, Hawaii
A man from Honolulu, Hawaii, developed diarrhea and heart palpitations after eating venison sashimi. Subsequent stool cultures revealed that he had been infected with Salmonella Birkenhead. The deer meat came from the island of Lana'i where he had participated in his family's annual deer hunt. He had eaten a large quantity of raw venison just as he had done in previous years.
