1994 Outbreak of Shigellosis Among Passengers Onboard the Viking Serenade Cruise Ship
An outbreak of gastroenteritis occurred among passengers and workers on a cruise ship voyage from San Pedro, California to Ensenada, Mexico. Shigella flexneri 2a was isolated from at least 12 passengers. The outbreak strain of Shigella was resistant to the antibiotic, tetracycline. Cruise-based, foodborne outbreaks involving Shigella bacteria had been reported previously.
