2009 Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium Infections Linked to Contact with Water Frogs
A multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections was associated with contact with African Dwarf Frogs which are an aquatic species of frog. Traceback from 21 patient homes and two distributors identified a breeder in Madera, California, Blue Lobster Farms, as the common source of the frogs. Environmental samples taken from aquariums containing the African Dwarf Frogs yielded Salmonella Typhimurium matching the outbreak strain. Additionally environmental samples collected from the facilities of the frog breeder yielded the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium.
