2005 Outbreak of Norovirus at a Wedding Reception, Minnesota
Wedding attendees called the Minnesota Department of Health foodborne illness hotline to report an outbreak of foodborne illness. The reception was held in the bride's parents' home, and food ingredients had been purchased from the local grocery store. Attendees were contacted to collect a food history and establish the number of cases. Seventy percent of the attendees met the case definition of illness. Stool samples from three attendees were gathered. Two of these samples were tested for Norovirus, and both tested positive. A case-control study found eating the deli sandwiches served at the reception was associated with illness. The grocery store deli where the ingredients had been purchased was inspected. All foods were at the proper temperatures. Cousins of the bride were rumored to have had the flu prior to the wedding reception. Each reception attendee prepared their own sandwich by selecting the bun, deli meat, cheese, and condiments. The exact source of the outbreak was not specifically identified, but could have been reception attendees who contaminated the food at the time of the reception.
