Initially two cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome were reported through the routine disease surveillance system in Connecticut. The ill were children who had a history of consuming raw milk from the Simsbury Town Farm Dairy. Additional laboratory confirmed and probable cases were reported and discovered through the investigative efforts. A number of poor sanitation and hygienic practices were discovered at the dairy. The same strain of E. coli O157:NM was identified in a milking cow. The diary sold the milk through farm sales, retail outlets, and to Whole Foods.
