An outbreak of Norovirus occurred among people who had eaten oysters harvested and distributed from Yaquina Bay, Oregon. Related illnesses were discovered in at least three states. The sixteen ill people came from ten households; they ate the oysters in restaurants or purchased them in stores. Sampling of oysters from the bay was initiated, but tests results were not available as of March 11. Oregon Oyster Farms, Inc., which harvests oysters from the bay recalled its production from February. A Portland-based distributor, OM Seafood Co., also ordered a recall. All suspected oysters in the U.S. have been removed from the market. The oysters had also been shipped to Taiwan; the FDA was checking to assure that these too had been removed from the marketplace.
