Raw, unpasteurized, whole milk purchased from Zinniker Family Farm near Elkhorn, Wisconsin, was associated with an outbreak of Campylobacter jejuni. The farm sold raw milk through a cow-share program. Campylobacter isolated from at least 25 of the ill patients shared the same genetic fingerprint. Manure samples that were obtained directly from milking cows on the farm shared the same genetic fingerprint. This was the third major outbreak involving raw milk in Wisconsin since 2001. Selling, or distributing, raw milk is illegal in Wisconsin except for "incidental sales" from producer to consumer on the farm.
